Location:  Canadian War Museum, 1 Vimy Place, Ottawa, Ontario

Duties:

  • Responsible for assisting Route Captains/Police Services when asked.
  • Assemble and place barricades and pylons along the route as directed.
  • Responsible for traffic control by directing cyclists and informing motorists of road closures.
  • Take down pylons and barricades following the event as directed.
  • Route Assistants work in pairs. You will be given a safety vest and must return it before leaving.

As a volunteer, you’ll receive:

Location:  Canadian War Museum, 1 Vimy Place, Ottawa, Ontario

Duties:

  • You will be given a route map and a list of volunteers for each stop. The safety vest and radio you will be given must be returned at the end of the event.
  • Before Departure:
  • Please locate the sign with your bus number in the hall outside the cafeteria (inside the Canadian War Museum). Gather the required number of route assistants for your bus as indicated on the back of the bus sign. Very important to ensure that all the people on your bus are on time as per your scheduled load/departure time.
  • On the bus:
  • Confirm that the bus driver is reachable.
  • Ensure volunteers get off at the proper location (rest stop volunteers and route assistants). Give each volunteer their zone number and clearly communicate to them that they must return to the drop off location when it is time for pickup. You will be getting off at the last stop on your section of the route and you will become a route assistant at that location.
  • You are responsible for ensuring all volunteers are picked up after the event.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Location:  Canadian War Museum, 1 Vimy Place, Ottawa, Ontario

Duties:

  • Working along Vimy Place at the front of the Canadian War Museum.
  • You and a team of volunteers will control vehicle parking and parking access to reserved spots.
  • Ensure only vehicles on the VIP parking list are allowed access to park in front of the museum in the barricaded meter parking spots.
  • You will help direct vehicles to the underground parking. There is NO PARKING in front of the main doors of the museum, only drop off is allowed in the bus turn-around area. Once underground garage area is full, two volunteers will proceed to Booth Street to restrict access to the parking garage. You will inform visitors they will need to park elsewhere.
  • If the vehicle is bringing supplies to their tent onsite for set up, you will allow them to do so and show them on the site map where they are located. (Set up between 5:30 a.m. – 6:30 a.m.).
  • Remind drivers to drive slowly as there are many people attending this event.
  • Wear a safety vest at all times.
  • This position requires confidence, tact and good customer service skills!

** You will be asked to attend a mandatory training session on Friday, May 1st  **

Duties:

  • Strong leadership skills are required.
  • Travel the route (by bike preferably).
  • Give support to the route assistants, and liaise with the event manager, police, and medical officials.
  • Ensure barricades are properly positioned before the start of the event and placed safely off the road as per event officials at the end of the event.
  • Ensure route assistants pick up all garbage along their stretch of route before releasing them from their assigned post.
  • Ensure all volunteers from your section have been picked up by the bus and returned to the Canadian War Museum.
  • Arrange for pickup of any volunteers who may have been left behind.

As a volunteer, you’ll receive:

All volunteers are entered into a draw to win a prize. Last year’s winner took home an Apple Watch.The draw will take place at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Sunday, May 3rd right after the event.

Event day goes Rain or Shine – so be sure to dress for the weather! Wear your official CN Cycle T-shirt. This will ensure that volunteers remain highly visible. If extra layers of clothing are worn, please wear your T-shirt on the outside. Wear comfortable shoes. It is strongly recommended that you bring any items you may require to ensure your comfort during your shift.
