Duties: Strong leadership skills are required.  You will be responsible for a group of 15 assistants working the start/finish line and you must be able to give clear direction and ensure safety of participants and volunteers at the start/finish line. Each team captain is provided with a copy of their specific area highlighting where the barricades will be placed, where the cones will be placed as well as event fencing along the roadway to aid with safety and guidance.  Ottawa Police Service will be at key locations as well and will work with the captain, although they will have their own separate instructions.

*You will be asked to attend a mandatory training session on Friday, May 5th .

Time: Plan to arrive by 5:15 a.m. and check-in at the Volunteer Registration Area – follow the signs. Shift is 5:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Please have a quick breakfast in the cafeteria and go directly to your position.

Duties: Working with a partner, you will control vehicle parking and parking access to reserved spots. Only the people on the VIP parking list are allowed to park in the barricaded parking meter spots at the front of the Canadian War Museum. If the vehicle is bringing supplies to their tent onsite for set up, you will allow them to do so and show them on the site map where they are located. (Set up between 5:30 a.m. – 6:30 a.m.).

You will help direct vehicles to the underground parking. There is NO PARKING in front of the main doors of the museum, only drop off allowed in the bus turn-around area. (See attached). Once underground garage area is full, two volunteers will proceed to Booth Street to restrict access to the parking garage. You will inform visitors they will need to park elsewhere.

Duties:  Working on site, under the direction of the volunteer supervisor you will be responsible for cleaning up the site during and after the event. Duties include picking up litter, emptying garbage cans and managing recyclables, and bringing items back to the Atelier. Shift is 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Duties:  Welcoming returning volunteers and thanking them for their efforts, signing community service forms (6 hours per form). Count number of remaining volunteer shirts of each size, packing into boxes and marking each box. Ensuring garbage is placed into bins and paper products are recycled. Additional packup of site, as required. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL THE VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION AREA HAS BEEN COMPLETELY PACKED UP.

Duties:  You will be given a route map and a listing of volunteers for each stop. The safety vest and radio you will be given must be returned at the end of the event.

Before Departure: Please locate the sign with your bus number in the hall outside the cafeteria inside the Canadian War Museum. Gather the required number of route assistants for your bus, as indicated on the back of the bus sign.  Very important to ensure that all the people on your bus are on time as per your scheduled load/departure time.

On Bus: Confirm that the bus driver is reachable.

Ensure volunteers get off at the proper location (rest stop volunteers and route assistants). Give each volunteer their zone number and clearly communicate to them that they must return to the drop off location when it is time for pickup. You will be getting off at the last stop on your section of the route and you will become a route assistant at that location.

You are responsible for ensuring all volunteers are picked up after the event.

Duties: Travel the route using the vehicle provided to you. Give support to the route assistants, and liaise with the event manager, police, and medical officials. Ensure barricades are properly positioned before the start of the event and placed safely off the road as per event officials at the end of the event. Ensure route assistants pick up all garbage along their stretch of route before releasing them from their assigned post. Ensure all volunteers from your section have been picked up by the bus and returned to the Canadian War Museum. Arrange for pickup of any volunteers who may have been left behind.

*You are required to attend a mandatory training session on Friday, May 4 at the Canadian War Museum. Dinner will be provided. Time to be determined.

Duties: Safety will be your number one priority! You will be responsible for directing 15K, 35K, 70K riders and 2K and 5K walkers leaving the start line and arriving at the finish line.  You will be provided with flags to help direct participants on event day.  As well you will be responsible for moving the cyclists safely and promptly along the parkway upon crossing the finish line and leading them to the event site.

All volunteers are entered into a draw to win a prize to be determined. The draw will take place at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Sunday, May 5th.

 

Registration

Volunteers must register online.

A reminder email will be sent on Monday, April 22, 2019 re-confirming position, reporting time and date. If you have registered to volunteer and do not receive a reminder email please get in touch with the Volunteer Co-Ordinator immediately at 613-738-4843. Event day goes Rain or Shine – so be sure to dress for the weather! Wear your official CN Cycle T-shirt. This will ensure that volunteers remain highly visible. If extra layers of clothing are worn, please wear your T-shirt on the outside. Wear comfortable shoes. It is strongly recommended that you bring any items you may require to ensure your comfort during your shift. (i.e. jacket, hat, sunscreen, back-pack, cell phone, etc.) Please be sure to e-mail your feedback after the event to volunteers@cncycle.ca. Your comments will help us improve the volunteer experience.
